How to Choose A Flight School- Flight Training Overview

General Overview of How to Choose A Flight School

Flight Training – Learning How to Fly

Learning to fly takes two forms of preparation and training. One form of flight training involves understanding the basics of flying an aircraft physically, how to command the aircraft to perform certain maneuvers, and how to deal with “tricky” flying situations due to inclement weather and other factors. This type of pilot training is obviously completed by going up  in an aircraft with a certified flight instructor,  taking the “stick” in order to get a feel for flying in normal and strenuous situations, practicing  how to take off, practicing how to land, so on and so forth;  all for accumulating the minimum required amount of flight hours set by the FAA for obtaining a pilot license.

The other type of flight training is as equally as important as it involves learning the theory of flying, the mathematics involved when flying, how to use analog instruments if and when there is a mechanical or electrical failure, how to deal with a wide range emergency situations, how to communicate with flight towers and controllers, and how to properly chart a flight course. To put things simply, when you go to fly a plane or a jet, wouldn’t you want to know how to fly the airplane or jet, where to fly it to, how to deal with precarious situations, how to fly in a inclement weather, and ultimately how to react in emergency situations? As learning how to fly an airplane is very hands on, the theory and academics behind flying an airplane safely are of equal if not greater importance.

The academic theory part of flight training school is predominately based off of literature, books, training manuals, instrument mock ups, flight simulators, and testing. Depending on the type of pilot school you decide to take, while taking into consideration how the actual flight school operates, most of the time will and should be taught in an actual classroom, although sometimes pilot classes can be issued and taken online for students to read, study, and sometimes for taking tests.

The Flight School Aircraft –

The actual aircraft that student pilots get to train in these days is quite important as technology is always changing and you do not want to train in airplanes that are too old or out of date. Furthermore, making sure that the flight school offers a sufficient number of up to date pilot training aircraft, has the right equipment and maintenance programs and facilities, and has enough qualified flight instructors. If you are planning on learning how to become a commercial airline pilot, make sure the pilot school offers commercial aircraft to train with.

The Cost of Flight School-

Learning to become a competent private pilot or commercial airline pilot is nowhere near as expensive as a university degree and certified flight schools can teach on a closer student to teacher ratio. “They” say you should have at least 5 flight schools to compare, research, and take a tour of before picking the best flight training school that fits your personal needs and financial situation.

The fact that you want to become a pilot means you have a rough estimate on how much it will cost you on average. Your safest bet is to choose a Flight School that accommodates not only your budget, but more so your personal and future professional needs as well. “Whatever you do, please do not sacrifice your needs because you are on a strict budget. Furthermore, don’t pay more for flight training school because for something you don’t even want or need. Do your due diligence and compare closely. You should even visit the pilot schools on your short list in person.

How to Choose a Commercial Flight School

How to choose a commercial flight school

Finally, you should choose a flight school because it offers the highest quality of pilot training you desire, while being flexible enough to fit in with your current lifestyle , and living conditions. Some student pilots choose part 41 flight school as they are just seeking a casual approach to earning their PPL or private pilot license. Part 141 flight school students on the other hand are typically a little more motivated as they are usually seeking a pilot career upon graduating commercial pilot school. In order for these student pilots to get where they want to be they need to obtain their PPL first so they can immediately start working towards their commercial pilot license (CPL), and/or commercial airline transport license(ATPL).

Just like in other professions, learning as a pilot is an on-going process. It requires patience, diligence, hard work, endurance, and a thirst for knowledge. The decision on how to choose a flight school shouldn’t be difficult when you know exactly what you want and exactly what you are looking forward to doing with your newly acquired pilot license or commercial pilot license upon graduating from pilot school.
